The application of regression models with interaction effect (also known as moderating effect) has become increasingly prevalent in empirical research, particularly when analyzing complex social, economic, and policy phenomena. Interaction terms are essential when the relationship between an independent variable and an outcome is not constant but instead varies depending on the value of another variable. For example, political institutions can moderate the effect of economic development on democratic stability, or the impact of education on wages can vary significantly by gender, work experience, or industry sector. Similarly, the effect of trade openness on economic growth may depend on a country’s level of financial development. Interaction effect allows researchers to capture conditional relationship – where the impact of one predictor depends on the level or category of another – and marginal analysis offers a precise framework for interpreting this conditional effect. This course provides both theoretical understanding of regression model with interaction terms and practical training using STATA in specifying, estimating, interpreting such model, as well as visualizing the results for clear and policy-relevant publication.
